Whether Or Not You Should Buy an EV

Electric vehicles are rapidly growing in popularity, with most automakers bringing models to market and most shifting away from building traditional gas-powered cars this decade. Drivers are interested in reducing energy costs, lower emissions, convenient home charging, and the promise of reduced maintenance costs. However, since EVs have gained popularity so quickly, buyers have been left with many questions, including where to charge an EV, how far a charge will take, and the overall cost of ownership. This is why the team at Gary Miller CDJR created this guide to help determine whether going electric is right for you.

Which Models and Types Are Available?

Electric vehicles come in all shapes and sizes, from small sedans to luxury SUVs and more, hitting the market every year. Technically speaking, there are three kinds of electric vehicles: Hybrid, Plug-In hybrid (PHEV), and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV or EV). Hybrid electric cars are powered by an internal combustion engine and one or more electric motors, which use energy stored in batteries. PHEVs can run on electricity for a limited distance before switching to gas/electric hybrid mode. BEVs can run exclusively on electricity and require the owner to plug it in to recharge the battery.

What is it Like to Drive an Electric Vehicle?

Electric Vehicles offer almost instant power from a stop, and they are both smooth and quiet when underway. With electric motors, there is no lag in power. As soon as you push the accelerator, the car takes off. For example, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe delivers an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of instant torque for heart-pounding performance off-road and on-road. The torque provided by the electric motor improves rock crawling capabilities and powerful speed off the line. The driving experience differs from an internal combustion engine (ICE) car as they glide effortlessly. Despite their heavy batteries, EVs offer a well-balanced driving experience, as in most EVs, the battery is positioned low in the vehicle.

How Long Does It Take to Charge an EV?

Charge times of EVs vary broadly, depending on the size of the battery, how fast the car can take charge, and the amperage of the circuit. For most EV drivers, charging overnight at home is the most convenient and cheapest option. On a typical Level 2 charging unit, it takes between 9 and 13 hours to fully charge an EV that can go more than 200 miles. Plug-in hybrids, with their smaller batteries, take significantly less time to recharge. For instance, the powerful 17.3 kWh battery that lies at the center of each Jeep 4xe vehicle only takes two hours to fully replenish its energy with an available Level II battery charger so you can get back to your all-electric adventure.

How Much Does Owning an EV Cost?

According to AAA, the electricity required to drive 15,000 miles per year in an electric vehicle costs an average of $546, while the amount of gas needed to drive the same distance costs $1,255. Plus, EVs do not require as much maintenance as gas-powered ones since they don't need oil changes or air-filter replacements. Maintaining your ICE to the automakers' recommendations will cost you $950 a year, whereas an EV will only cost you $330 a year.
