The summer months can cause some wear and tear thanks to high temperatures, and the fact that many people will be driving more frequently in order to take advantage of the nice weather. Therefore, it's important to set you and your car up for success by taking care of your vehicle's service needs. Here at Gary Miller, we have an in-house service center staffed with expert mechanics who know how to care for all makes and models! Read on to learn how to prepare your car for summer!

Service Your Air Conditioning

When the temperatures start to rise, your air conditioning will be your best friend! If you've ever had the misfortune of driving in the summer with a broken air conditioner, then you know how much of a struggle it can be. Driving with the windows open can be a short-term solution, but it can actually cause excess drag while you're driving at high speeds, and negatively affect your gas mileage! As we head towards summer, make sure you have your air conditioning serviced to make sure it's in great shape! Your mechanic will change your air conditioning filter, and make sure that all of the wiring and connections are in good condition. Plus, they'll top off the refrigerant fluid, which will allow the car to actually cool the air coming in!

Change your Oil, and Top Off Fluids

We just mentioned the importance of refrigerant fluid, but there are many other fluids that are essential to a healthy car! This summer, be sure you're up-to-date on your oil change, which will protect your engine, and keep your car running efficiently. Depending on your vehicle and your driving habits, you should try to schedule an oil change every 7,500 miles. If you're driving in extreme heat this summer, be sure to get your oil changed more frequently for best results! Other fluids to take care of include engine coolant, power steering fluid, or transmission fluid. Your mechanic will be able to quickly assess the levels of all of your necessary fluids, and top them off as needed.

Tire Maintenance

In any season, having good-quality tires is a must. Your tires are the first point of contact with the road, and hot summer pavement may take its toll without proper maintenance. One of the simplest ways to care for your tires is with a regular tire rotation. By regularly moving your tires to a new position on the vehicle, you'll be able to make sure that all four tires get an equal amount of wear. If you've had your tires for a while, be sure to check the treads to make sure you're getting the proper amount of traction while you drive. Worn-down tires can prevent your car from coming to a stop as quickly as it should, and they can also negatively affect your gas mileage! For best results, get a regular tire rotation, and make sure your tires are at the correct pressure before summer hits.

Wiper Blades and Wiper Fluid

As we all know, summer doesn't always mean clear, sunny skies. It's not uncommon to experience heavy rain during the summer, so it's essential to have high-quality windshield wipers on your vehicle! If your windshield wipers are leaving streaks on your windshield, don't hesitate to swap them out for a new pair. This can easily be done by your mechanic at your next appointment. While you're at it, make sure you have a proper amount of windshield wiper fluid. During summer, you might notice an increase in dust and pollen, which can accumulate on your windshield, especially if you keep your car parked outside. It's important to make sure that you can clean off your windshield when needed, to ensure excellent visibility at all times!
