Hybrid and fully electric vehicles have grown in popularity over the years for several reasons. There are drivers out there who are attracted to the smooth power delivery and acceleration you can only get from a hybrid or electric vehicle. Other drivers are attracted to the impeccable technology and the unique styling. The most typical reason drivers consider these vehicles is the fuel economy. With these kinds of vehicles, you get the convenience of plugging in and charging up from the comfort of your garage and the ability to save tons of money at the pump. Naturally, there will be those out there who have questions about these one-of-a-kind vehicles, and you can check out the most frequently asked questions below!

What's the difference between MPG and MPGe?

When researching the different options for hybrid and electric vehicles, you will probably notice that some vehicles, such as the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, have their fuel economies listed as "MPGe." Now, you might be asking yourself, what exactly does MPGe mean? Simply put, MPGe stands for "Miles Per Gallon Equivalent." Meanwhile, traditional MPG will measure how many miles your vehicle can travel using one gallon of gas. Considering how hybrid and fully electric vehicles won't always need gasoline to operate, "MPGe" is a far more helpful metric for comparing energy consumption for your electric vehicle!

What exactly is kWh/100 miles?

The Environmental Protection Agency uses the established energy standard of 115,000 BTUs per gallon of gasoline to create a miles-per-gallon equivalent. This means that if you ignitied 1 US gallon of unleaded gasoline, it would generate that much heat. So you get the same amount of heat, 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity would be required. Thus, one gallon of gasoline will yield the same heat energy as 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity. If your electric vehicle can travel 100 miles with 33.7 kWh of electricity, it would be rated with the MPG equivalent of 100 MPGe. Now, if an electric car can travel the exact 100 miles using 32 kWh, the second electric vehicle would receive a rating of 105 MPGe as it is more efficient. Much like MPG ratings for a gas-powered vehicle, the Environmental Protection Agency rates the MPGe across the city, highway, and combined fuel economy.

What is the mileage range rating for electric vehicles?

One key component for a hybrid or electric vehicle is the range rating. It is how far the vehicle is rated to drive on electric power alone, and for hybrid vehicles, how far it can go on gasoline power with a fully charged battery. Remember that the Environmental Protection Agency bases its calculations on the premise that the various charging options will complete at least a 90 percent charge. You should keep this number as a guide rather than an absolute value. It's also important to remember that much like the MPG of a gasoline vehicle, the EV range can vary wildly depending on how you drive. Certain things that can contribute to your MPGe rating are cargo load, terrain, climate, and how much you press down on the accelerator.
