Most drivers have heard of miles per gallon, but you might not have heard of the miles per gallon equivalent or MPGe. Here at Gary Miller CDJR, we are here to provide you with everything you need to know about miles per gallon and all of the electric and hybrid vehicles we have on our lot, including the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, and Wrangler 4xe, which all use the MPGe equivalent as the metric for how the vehicle runs. When you are done reading this article, check out our entire MPGe inventory, which you can also find here on our website!

What is MPGe?

The miler per gallon equivalent, or MPGe, is the standard metric that the Environmental Protection Agency sets for all vehicles that run on other energy sources, including electricity. If you have a plug-in hybrid vehicle, it might run on both MPG and MPGe. Vehicles like the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe run on gasoline and electric energy. The MPG for a PHEV vehicle like the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV will run on gasoline when the battery runs out. Meanwhile, the MPGe refers to vehicles that run entirely on electricity. The MPGe concept was developed in 2010, and while it won't be a 1:1 comparison, it will allow drivers to make a more informed decision when they want to buy an energy-efficient vehicle. All vehicles that use the MPGe rating will display it on the EPA fuel efficiency label; you can also find it right on the EPA's website!

Calculation for the MPG or MPGe

Much like miles per gallon, the MPGe is an average mileage comparison of how many miles a vehicle can travel per gallon of gasoline or how many miles an electric vehicle can travel on the equivalent of electrical energy. All the energy contained in one gallon of gas is the equivalent of 33.7 kWh of electrical use. To use this as an example, an electric vehicle can go 100 miles on 33.7kWh electricity.

The EV Window Sticker

With the EV window sticker, you will get all the mandated information about the vehicle being sold. This includes fuel efficiency, fuel costs, greenhouse gas, and smog emissions. In addition, for those who get an electric vehicle, that label will also have additional information specific to hybrid and electric vehicles. Things like kilowatt-hours per 100 miles will be included, which is the EPA standard for measuring energy efficiency in EVs. The other info consists of the files per gallon equivalent or MPGe and the annual fuel costs estimated based on the yearly driving range of 15,000 miles. Last but not least, a driving range is calculated when your EV has a 90% charge.

How to Save Money with an EV

While your electric vehicle will cost you a little more upfront, overall ownership will eventually be lower as electric-powered motors tend to be more efficient and cheaper to operate than gasoline-powered engines. Many electric vehicles are over 90% efficient when converting energy to power, while gas-powered vehicles are only 40% efficient. Less energy will be wasted, and electric cars are far more cost-effective. Finally, electric vehicles will also have significantly lower maintenance costs as there will be fewer moving parts in your engine, leading to lower maintenance needs. The warranty will cover your battery; you only need to pay for things like the tires and windshield wipers.
