The land that became Fredonia was originally settled in 1804 and then incorporated as Fredonia in 1829. In 1821, a man named William Hart dug the first well for the sole purpose of producing natural gas for the U.S. Dug out by shovels by hand; the well was 27 feet deep. The gas pipeline was made from hollowed-out logs and sealed with tar and rags. By 1825, the pipeline provided enough gas to fuel lights for a gristmill and four stores. In 1858, the Fredonia Gas Light Company became America's first natural gas company. Today, a stone monument in downtown Fredonia marks the site of the first well dug by William Hart.
