What Engine Powers the 2025 Jeep Compass?
The Jeep Compass's powertrain was upgraded with a turbocharged engine for the 2023 model year. Replacing the discontinued naturally aspirated 2.4L I-4 engine is a 2.0L I-4 engine with a twin-scroll low-inertia turbocharger mounted to it for forced air induction. By reducing its displacement, the engine offers better fuel efficiency, but by adding a turbocharger, it simultaneously provides more power. The 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine provides 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, which is an increase of 23 horsepower and 49 lb-ft of torque. With an electronically actuated wastegate, the turbocharger provides better responsiveness and faster acceleration. Meanwhile, smooth shifts are provided by the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission.
Active Drive 4x4
For the 2025 Compass, Jeep uses Active Drive 4x4 for its four-wheel drive system. Active Drive is popular for its impressive traction from inclement weather to rugged terrain while also maximizing efficiency. Under normal conditions, such as dry, smooth pavement, the Active Drive system uses its power transfer unit and disconnecting rear axle to disengage the rear wheels, powering only the front wheels and allowing the rears to spin freely. When a low-traction environment is encountered, the PTU will automatically redistribute power to the rear wheels, driving all four to regain and maintain traction. This happens automatically with limited driver input. However, drivers can use the Selec-Terrain traction control system to override the drivetrain operation. By using a center console-mounted switch, drivers can choose from Auto, Sport, Sand/Mud, and Snow modes to optimize the traction control.
What Makes the Jeep Compass Trailhawk Trail Rated?
The Jeep Compass Trailhawk is the one trim level in the Compass lineup that earns Jeep's Trail Rated 4x4 badge. Its impressive capability begins with its 4x4 system, Active Drive Low. By replacing Active Drive's standard single-speed transfer case with a two-speed one, the Compass Trailhawk gains a 4-Low mode to provide greater control in low-speed crawling conditions, such as off-roading. The Trailhawk also adds Rock mode to the Selec-Terrain switch. This automatically shifts the transfer case into 4-Low and optimizes the system to provide optimal traction no matter how rugged the terrain gets. The Compass Trailhawk is also equipped with Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires to maintain grip on any surface from loose gravel to deep snow. Other features include two front and one rear red tow hooks, off-road suspension, four skid plates, an anti-glare hood decal, and more.
